Archetypes according to Merriam-Webster is the groundwork for everything; its a perfect example from which all ideas of that example are just copies. Many of the archetypes in Ovid's Metamorphosis are common in today's society and my life. Metamorphosis uses stories of people hunting for truth, riches and immortality. I find my self staying up many nights contemplating how i am going to strike rich so my family never wants again and how i am going to leave my mark on this world so that my name is still spoken day after day in generations to come. Some of these archetypes have changed to fit today's views of the world but they hold the same premise. Although people do want to live forever I believe most do not; most people would rather have great statues erected in their glory. Giving us a slightly different connotation to the theme of immortality that i believe is portrayed in Metamorphosis. Heroes struggling with seemingly unbeatable monsters shows similarities with today's views on depression, stress, anxiety as well as tyrannical authority figures. I do not believe much has changed with this archetype other than the way it is viewed back then it was easier for the Romans to view things as monsters because that is what they believed in but today not everyone has an open mind to the idea of monsters so it is a bit harder to wrap our heads around. Many of these archetypes hold the same meaning today they are just viewed in a different way than the Romans viewed them in their time. Like many other ideas they all change to fit the worlds views but hold the same basic premise.
I like your view of this post I would have never thought of todays anxiety and stress when reading the story but they do correlate with the story and the ideas of archetypes.
ReplyDeleteI love how you did a little of your research before you started then added that research in the beginning so your wording of it would be accurate.
